Prof YOUNG Kenneth
Kenneth YOUNG (楊綱凱) was the Founding Master (2011–2016) of CW Chu College and is currently Advisor to the Master and Honorary Fellow. He obtained his BS and PhD from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). During his undergraduate years at Caltech, he benefited from a student house which had a fully-residential and communal dining arrangement, with only 100 students.
Young has been a teacher at CUHK since 1973, and is currently Emeritus Professor in the Department of Physics. He was a recipient of the Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award for his teaching in physics, and has also taught in General Education; he has served as chairman of the Senate Committee on General Education. He has been at various times chairman of the Department of Physics, Dean of Science and Dean of the Graduate School, and served as Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University from 1994 to 2011.
Young has also been a member of the University Grants Committee (1993 to 2005), member (1993 to 1996) and chairman (1999 to 2005) of its Research Grants Council, and also member of its Quality Assurance Council (2013 to 2016). He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, and has been a Vice-President of the Association of Asia-Pacific Physical Societies. He has been chairman of the Hong Kong Curriculum Development Council (2011 to 2017) and in that capacity also a member of the Education Commission. He is the Chairman of the Shaw Prize Council and Vice Chairman of its Board of Adjudicators.
