From the College Master
This revamped issue of the CW Chu College Newsletter arrives at a meaningful moment for our community, as we renew our resolve to connect more closely and more regularly with all who call CWC home. Through fresh design and expanded storytelling, we hope this edition will bring you nearer to the lives, aspirations, and everyday commitments of our students, alumni, and teachers.
In these pages, you will journey with Prof Martin Tsui from Hong Kong’s polluted waters of the 1980s to the pristine ice of Antarctica, tracing a vocation in environmental science shaped by curiosity, perseverance, and a deep concern for our shared planet. You will also meet our alumnus Charles Wu, a member of the College’s first cohort, whose path from investment banking to biographer and AI entrepreneur reflects a thoughtful, examined life that refuses to be confined by conventional expectations.
Another feature brings you to the lunch table with Prof Amos Tai, whose playful self-description as ‘Doctor of the Earth’ is matched by his serious commitment to climate science, sustainable diets, and the moral choices we make through our everyday habits. His story is a reminder that education at CW Chu College extends well beyond the classroom into the way we eat, live, and care for creation and neighbour.
You will also read about our Service Team’s capstone project, which partners with local secondary schools to accompany socially disadvantaged youths through camps, workshops, and sustained mentoring. Their work vividly embodies our vision of being ‘involved’ citizens: students who translate empathy into action, and who learn that education is not preparation for life, but life itself.
Alongside these longer features, this issue highlights recent College activities and the many achievements of our students and staff in the past months. Whether in academic awards, co-curricular initiatives, or quiet acts of service, their efforts testify to a vibrant community still growing into its promise as a small, fully residential college that nurtures both minds and hearts.
The revamp of this Newsletter has been a truly collaborative undertaking. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to our College staff and to members of the Communications and Information Committee, whose dedication and creativity have shaped not only the look and feel of this issue, but also the way we imagine communicating with you in the years ahead. Most of all, I hope that as you read, you will feel invited to stay connected with CW Chu College—to return, to participate, and to share your own stories with us.
